WHATEVER that has been said and done about the United States of America, I believe it is still a great country and the people there in general are a great people who still believe in fairness and freedom of expression.

For all the major "faux pas” committed by the great America, it has succeeded in being a superpower that believes in freedom of expression.

I READ with delight that from Feb 19 to June 18 this year, there will be a competition aimed at increasing public awareness of consumerism.

This is an excellent measure to not only inform consumers of their rights but also to educate them on how to shop and avoid pitfalls when buying.

IN response to our Hotline report headlined “Long wait for water meter refunds" published on Jan 21, a spokesperson for Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) clarifies that based on the company's standard procedure, water meter deposits will be refunded within 21 days provided that all the documents required for the submission are completed and in order.

DALJIT of Petaling Jaya is upset with the alleged lack of security at the Nissan Service Centre in Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur.

On Jan 19, DALJIT sent his Nissan Urvan van for regular service at the centre at noon. When he later picked up his vehicle at 4.30pm, he accidentally left his bag at the reception desk.

TAN of Petaling Jaya alleges that Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) has "manipulated" her bills to strike out her credit balance.

"The actual meter readings on my bill dated Sept 2 last year was at 416 to 426 but the Syabas statement recorded 416 to 438. I was billed 22m3 at RM14.38," she claims, adding that these errors were not rectified  even after she lodged a complaint.

IN reference to the article '14 Secondary and three primary schools recognised as SBTs (high- performance schools )', I am appalled by it for the reason that these schools will be granted RM1 million each.

IT is sad and heartbreaking to learn of yet another tragic accident involving students, this time, off Penang.

Our heartfelt sympathies to the families of the five students and the teacher, who happened to live near my parents' house in Bagan Jermal, Butterworth, who perished in the dragon boat accident. May they rest in peace.

Once again, there will be a round of finger-pointing by some, alleging that the school and the teachers or the organisers did not give due consideration to safety and security when holding events of this nature.

THE use of 'super' MyKads or MyIDs for government dealings is a good move to simplify cumbersome bureaucracy and improve the public delivery system.

The new mechanism might also be able to reduce corruption, and wastage of people’s precious time and money.

This is a good example by the government to put the people’s interest first. We should have more such  reative and sensible initiatives.

IN the 70s, everyone was or appeared to be a leftist or a revolutionary. The leftists loved Cuban revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara, popularly known as "Che", and other symbols of freedom.

In Europe, mainly in the Netherlands and Germany, I never failed to wear my black beret and my army fatigue trying hard to look like "Che", and smoking that awful French cigarette, Gaulouise.

IT’S good that Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin has accepted the appeal by nightspots on Jalan P. Ramlee to be allowed to continue engaging DJs and live bands.

The road is undoubtedly Kuala Lumpur’s most popular entertainment strip. Also at stake is the employment of close to 1,000 people, mostly Malaysians in their 20s.

THE books 1001 Foods You Must Try Before You Die (or die trying) and 100 Most Beautiful Squares of the World are the two most precious "assistants" I possess if I need to "astral" travel, or visit the world's most exciting places and taste very exotic and strange food, from my armchair!

For example, in 1001..., there is this Montana Testicle Festival, held each year in the United States. The festival is for those with "balls". Pun intended.

SLOW service and a 'missing' pepperoni pizza were among the highlights of CHANDRA's spoilt Christmas eve dinner.

He brought his family-of-six out for the special occasion at the Supremo Deli outlet in Ampang on Dec 24.

"What a terrible dining experience. To make matters worse, it was my mother's birthday."

CHANDRA says he and his family arrived at the restaurant at 8pm but they had to wait for 10 minutes before their order was taken.

CLEAR the floor and let the music play.

Listen to the beat and get down on it!

The dancers among us will find it natural to just wave and swerve to the rhythm of the music but if you are  anything like me, a guy with two left feet, you would quiver, shiver and move completely out of synch, and end up tripping on the floor! It is not a pretty sight.

If you ask my parents, Cikgu Eton and Cikgu Kadir, how they met and ended up with each other, you will definitely be in for quite a ride.

If you ask them separately, you'd perhaps get two different pictures.

However, pay a little bit more attention and you'll realise that Cikgu Eton and Cikgu Kadir are painting the same picture from different angles.

IT was one humid summer evening in Greece, between Thessalonika and Athens, many, many moons ago that I took a wrong turn into a deserted side road without realising that the time was about 6.30pm.

Even though it was summer and the sun shone till about nine at night, it was still late in the evening.

I REFER to the statement by Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy chief commissioner, Datuk Abu Kassim Mohammed, who vowed that he would take steps to restore the credibility of the organisation when he takes over the top post from Jan 1, 2010.

I REFER to The Malay Mail Hotline article "Unpleasant experience on the ERL" published on Dec 1, where the customer was not allowed to use his return ticket from the Bandar Tasik Selatan station to KL Sentral as
it was meant to be for travel from Putrajaya.

PRESENTLY, the retirement age in Malaysia is at 55 years for the private sector and 58 years for government employees. Except for the additional three years of service for government employees, the mandatory retirement age for employees has not changed since our independence more than five decades ago.

Life expectancy has increased tremendously over the years to 73 years today compared to when we became an independent nation in 1957. So, on average, a Malaysian will have almost 20 years of no work and no pay.

REFERRING to the front page story in The Malay Mail yesterday, I was shocked to read about the two boys who were accidentally shot by a security guard at a Tenaga Nasional Berhad service centre in Jalan Klang Lama.

Even to use the word "accidentally" here is not suitable because such an incident could have been avoided if only the security guard took his job seriously.

I REFER to your front page report on Monday and was taken aback after reading that Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, a well-known spiritual leader of Pas, called on the people to pray to the Almighty to bring bad luck to our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

I have high respects for the Tok Guru but after reading about this bad luck prayer call, I have virtually lost my respect for him.

I HAVE been an avid reader of The Malay Mail for many years now and it is and always will be my favourite newspaper. Why? Because it covers a wide range of news with a different angle.

Aptly known as The Paper That Cares, I think The Malay Mail has done quite a lot for the community, especially those staying in the Klang Valley, by publishing stories on the difficulties faced by the people.

GERALDINE from Kelana Jaya has a problem with her next door neighbour's poor attitude towards
cleanliness.

The house next to hers at SS7/8 is rented out to a tenant, who runs a catering business. It is occupied by the tenant's workers and they basically operate their business there — preparing and cooking food for clients.

The tenant himself sometimes stays at the house and they have been living there for the past five or six months, GERALDINE says.

I refer to my earlier letter, which was published by Malay Mail on Aug 19, 2009, titled "No discipline in our courts".

The same situation described before has repeated. I once again went for the next court hearing on Nov 24 for my sexual harassment case and it was again postponed to March 22 next year — due to the defendant's lawyer making the same petty, pathetic excuse that the prosecutor had not given him enough documents.

REFERENCE is made to the Malay Mail Hotline complaint “Upset by abrupt RapidKL changes”.

On behalf of RapidKL, we would like to apologise for the unpleasant experience faced by Sharma when she called the RapidKL Helpline. We will look into the matter seriously and take necessary action.

We wish to inform that RapidKL had put up posters in all buses along the affected routes since Nov 10. The announcement on the routes realignment was also posted in the RapidKL website on the afternoon of Nov 12.

I HAVE been living in Bandar Country Homes for the past 15 years and have noticed that the traffic congestion here has been getting from bad to worse as the years have gone by.

The traffic congestion is so bad throughout the day and during peak hours, getting home in the evenings is like going through hell.

Part of the reason is due to the access road from the Rawang toll plaza to Bandar Country Homes, Bandar Tasik Puteri, Kundang, Emerald and many other new housing projects being only a single lane road.

I REFER to your front page story ‘Top brass to face rap’ in yesterday’s Malay Mail and welcome the move by the Royal Malaysian Navy to court martial those who were found negligent or identified as not adhering to the Navy’s standard operating procedures (SOPs) during the fire on the battle ship KD Sri Inderapura.

I understand the officers and the men in the vessel were highly train

I REFER to the article in the Malay Mail on Oct 14 advising residents to overlook neighbourhood security
matters themselves.

The same concerns have been shared by many of my friends in the neighbourhood since I moved to Section 11, Bayu Damansara two years ago. We were forced to hire security guards to protect ourselves.

IT is rather sickening to see some people being just so stubborn and refusing to adhere to rules.

Recently, I went to a cinema and I was totally irritated by some parents who chose to bring their children along for the movie at 10.55pm. It wasn’t a children’s movie – so, I really can’t understand why these parents would bring their young ones along so late.

The little girl looked about four years old and was walking up and down the stairs in the cinema hall while the movie was on. If that was not bad enough, she was also running through the seat rows.

THE Ministry Of Natural Resources and Environment appreciates the concerns highlighted by S. M. Mohd Idris of Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM), in his letter “Take care of all zoos in Malaysia” (Malay Mail, Nov 3, 2009).

The ministry is aware of the growing concern among public and SAM on the well being of wildlife kept at zoos.

THE Association for the Improvement of Mass-Transit (Transit) has taken note of the proposal for a ‘Sentral’ public transport hub for Petaling Jaya, which was mooted by a local developer and supported by the Petaling Jaya City Council.

This proposed ‘Sentral’ station would be located in Kota Damansara and would integrate the bus and LRT services.

ANNA is alarmed that her glass dining table suddenly shattered. “I was in bed at 11.10pm when I heard a loud, explosive sound of glass shattering. I was startled when I saw the table in my living room as I found that it was broken and there were pieces of glass all over the floor.”

ANNA said she usually uses the table to work on her laptop until around midnight.

THE authorities have verified that the recent khalwat raid conducted by some residents’ association members was not authorised and we now know how to tell whether someone is authorised or not.

Presumably, anyone assaulted during this event should lodge a police report for the assault.

Yet the hullaballoo is just amazing.

Yes, this was a bad thing. But, it hardly is anywhere near the end of the world.

According to www.beyonceonline.com, sales in Malaysia for Beyonce’s latest album have made it achieve platinum status. Yet, her refusing to perform here without a credible reason reflects arrogance. I strongly urge all to boycott this concert. Please get your refund as quickly as possible.

Beyonce, it is understandable that you refused to perform here in 2007, for that decision was not in your power. This time around, you are well aware of strict rules.

A COUPLE of years ago, I received one of the funniest, if not most amusing, calls from someone whom I thought was a friend – someone who should know me, well, inside out.

I RECENTLY attended the scheduled hearing of my case of sexual harassment, classified under Section 354 Penal Code, two years after the incident happened to me.

The case was mentioned last year and the first hearing was finally held on Aug 17 at the magistrate’s court.
