PHILADELPHIA: Tiger Woods' (left) return at the Masters after four months of self-imposed exile will create a circus atmosphere that will test his ability to perform under maximum pressure, PGA Tour players said.

"We have all put him up on such a pedestal, not only in the golf, but we took for granted the personal side, too," golfer Steve Stricker said this morning. "We'll have to wait and see what happens when he comes back.

LONDON: The World Cup is to become a biennial event and after a break this year the team competition
will return in 2011 with a record purse of US$7.5 (RM24.9 million).

The World Cup, which has been held annually since 1953 apart from two occasions in the 1980s, will next year boast one of the richest prize funds in golf when it is held at the Mission Hills Resort on Hainan Island in southern China from Nov 24-27.

MIAMI: South African Ernie Els ended his barren two year spell by winning the WGC-CA Championship by four strokes this morning after a classy six-under final round of 66 held off compatriot Charl Schwartzel.

Els last won on the tour in March 2008 at the Honda Classic, and his victory comes just a week after he tied for 67th at the same event in Palm Beach Gardens.

KUALA LUMPUR: Maybank Malaysian Open winner Noh Seung-yul maintained his redhot form to share the opening round lead with Danny Chia of Malaysia on six-under-par 66 at the British Open Championship International Final Qualifying — Asia.

Noh, 18, shot an eagle and seven birdies against a bogey and a double bogey at the Saujana Golf and Country Club to put himself in prime position for one of four tickets available to the British Open in July.

PALM BEACH GARDENS: Colombian Camilo Villegas won  his first title since the end of the 2008 season, firing a two-under par 68 to capture the US PGA Honda Classic by a record-tying five strokes.

Villegas birdied three holes in a row to seize a six-stroke lead with eight holes remaining, then made bogeys on three of the next five before hanging on, sinking a 15-foot birdie at the 18th to finish on 13-under 267.

"It's never as easy as you think," Villegas said.

SINGAPORE: Japan' s Ai Miyazato won the US$1.3m (RM4.4m) HSBC Women's Champions tournament to continue her sparkling start to the USLPGA season with a second straight title.

Miyazato, the joint overnight leader with American Juli Inkster, posted a 69 for a 10-under total of 278 for the tournament and took home the winner's cheque of US$195,000.

Miyazato's win in Singapore capped a fine start for the 24-year-old who won the season opener in Thailand last
week.

MARANA (Arizona): Ian Poulter recorded the biggest victory of his career when he beat fellow Briton Paul Casey 4&2 in the 36-hole WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship final this morning.

Poulter took an early grip at Dove Mountain and was four up through 14 holes before Casey won the 15th with a birdie and the 18th with a par. Two birdies at the start of the afternoon round restored Poulter's four-hole advantage and he went on to close out his fellow Englishman on the 34th green.

LOS ANGELES: Golf superstar Tiger Woods will break his silence, speaking publicly for the first time since revelations of marital infidelity launched a tabloid firestorm, his agent said this morning.

The 34-year-old is to speak on Saturday from the clubhouse at the TPC Sawgrass, headquarters of the US PGA Tour at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Agent Mark Steinberg said in a statement that Woods would speak to a “small group of friends, colleagues and close associates” about his past and what he plans next, as well as apologising for his behaviour.

KUALA LUMPUR: The inaugural Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia has been scheduled to take place in Malaysia from Oct 22 to 24 this year at the prestigious Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC).

The Sime Darby Group, the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and event promoter IMG yesterday announced that they will, for the first time in Malaysia’s history, bring a full-field LPGA sanctioned event to Malaysia’s shores.

PACIFIC PALISADES (California): Steve Stricker won the Northern Trust Open this morning by two strokes after shooting a final round 70 to finish with a 16-under total of 268.

It was Stricker's eighth tour victory and his fifth since 2007. Briton Luke Donald, who shot a 66, finished second while Dustin Johnson tied with J.B. Holmes for third, three strokes further back.

Stricker had to return to the course early this morning to finish his third round which had been suspended due to bad light. He had a five-stroke lead with four holes remaining and extended it to six.

While the three-time Major winner was uncertain of the best way forward for the US circuit, Harrington said he would keep his own options open on whether to use the controversial 20-year-old Ping wedge.
