Reds play blame game — Rafa

MANAGER Rafa Benitez admitted a blame culture has crept into Liverpool's play and vowed to eradicate
it before it further affects confidence.

Benitez was dismayed by his side's shortcomings at Wigan on Monday and perturbed when he sat through a re-run of the 1-0 defeat and saw signs of more disarray in the ranks as individual  errors were met with accusing stares and pointing fingers.

ENGLAND will step up their security as they attempt to hunt down and identify the culprits behind the illegal bugging of their team hotel in Hertfordshire.

After launching an investigation, the FA will make every effort to avoid a repeat, even though they already enlisted the services of top security specialists in an effort to protect manager Fabio Capello and his multi-millionaire footballers.

Valencia's goal-machine David Villa is back in business and is now on top of Primera Liga's scoring chart with 17 goals. This is one more than Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi who has been occupying the spot for some time now.

THE "honeymoon period" at Manchester City is well and truly over. On Wednesday night Roberto Mancini's expensively-assembled team of footballing superstars was dumped out of the FA Cup by Stoke City, realistically ending the Manchester club's hopes for any silverware this season.

THE World Cup in South Africa is just over 100 days away. So it’s welcome news that Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) has bought that exclusive right to air 24 live and 11 delayed matches for the benefit of those who do not have Astro in their homes.

RTM has targeted 10 million fans to watch the superstars in action, live. But still, this country now has a population of more than 28 million. So it will be much better if these fans, especially in rural areas, "presented" with all the 64 matches live.

THE race for the final Uefa Champions league spot continues apace, and we may get a clearer idea as to the genuine contenders and flattering-to-deceive pretenders this weekend. Manchester City host Liverpool at Eastlands in the pick of Sunday’s ties, with Roberto Mancini’s men struggling to assert their credentials as the 'Big Four' party poopers.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Lawn Tennis of Malaysia (LTAM) have embarked on a serious quest to develop the sport starting with the grassroots. Among the plans include the "Play and Stay" catering for children below the age of 10.

The Play and Stay concept attracts the young ones to the game — playing with smaller racquets, softer balls and on smaller courts. This is part of LTAM’s longterm development which is slowly making an impact nationwide. Other sports can benefit from such a programme.

BURNLEY will be under new management this weekend, after the surprise departure of Owen Coyle. I use the word "surprise", since the reasons he gave for his allegiance change seem to lack substance and perhaps even a degree of coherence.

KUALA LUMPUR: Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek propounded the idea of keeping the national Under-23 team together after their victorious feat at the Laos Sea Games last month.

HOLA (all and Happy 2010!)

Well...Cristiano Ronaldo wants to see Real Madrid displace bitter rivals Barcelona as the best team in the world this year. Good for the Portuguese ace and Los Blancos.

Friday, December 4th, 2009 12:15:00

HOW much patience do the owners of Manchester City have? If their pockets are apparently limitless in depth, surely their tolerance isn’t, and after a quite remarkable seven successive league draws, their veneer of confidence and faith in their manager must be wearing gossamer thin.

Friday, November 27th, 2009 12:37:00

Hola!

IT'S El Clasico weekend again in Primera Liga. And this time, Barcelona will be the hosts at the 98,000 capacity Nou Camp on Monday (2am) — with bitter rivals Real Madrid gunning to stun the champions in front of their own fans — and in the process widen the gap to four points over the champions in the table.

WHILE nothing will be decided this weekend as far as the ultimate destiny of the Barclays Premier League title is concerned, some questions may well be answered.

KHAIRY JAMALUDDIN finally broke his silence — and put an end to talks about him quitting the FA of Malaysia. Responding to the story in Mailsport — End of the Road? — yesterday, Khairy, the deputy president, insisted he was “not going anywhere”.

The question, however, remains — on whose ticket will he contest in next year’s elections? Khairy was appointed FAM deputy president in Sept 2007 and will serve until 2010.

WHAT a season we have had this year! The new regulations introduced in 2009 were the biggest that F1 has had in about 10 years and it shook up the establishment.

Ferrari and McLaren were nowhere at the beginning of the season and this allowed some of the mid-fi eld runners to stake a claim. Red Bull, Toyota and Williams were very quick at the beginning of the year, but they were no where as good as the new Brawn GP, who arose from the ashes of Honda.

TOTTENHAM finished bottom of the English First Division in 1915. That’s why there has always been such a bitter rivalry between them and their North London counterparts Arsenal.

There’s nothing like a slice of simplistic history to get the imagination working, is there?

HOLA!

Much has been said about Real Madrid’s debacle in the Copa del Rey when they were bashed 4-0 by a third-tier oufit Alcorcon on Tuesday. Many just could not believe this as Real still fielded a strong team with experienced players in the match.

The Real fans are REALLY furious with the team’s performance of late. How could Real lose to a team like Alcorcon?

THE last time Liverpool lost four games in a row, the year was 1987. Kenny Dalglish was the manager then, and the Anfield club boasted the prolific goal scoring talents of Ian Rush.

THE international break can be a nuisance. If a team win their league match prior to the weekend off, the momentum could be lost, while teams that tasted the bitterness of defeat, have a couple of weeks to ponder their shortcomings. Portsmouth, I suggest, would love to have played last weekend.

INTERLAGOS, Sao Paulo hosts the penultimate round of the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship. It has been the scene for memorable title deciders in the last two years, with Kimi Raikkonen snatching the title from the McLaren duo (Lewis Hamilton & Fernando Alonso) in 2007 and Hamilton winning the 2008 title on the very last corner.

All Argentina fans worldwide, including those many fanatical ones in Malaysia, are sweating hot and cold. They are praying hard that Argentina, led by under-fire manager Diego Maradona, will not be knocked out cold from the World Cup in South Africa next summer.

THE FA of Malaysia (FAM) may privatise the domestic league in 2011. Well and good. The move is long overdue. Most developed football nations have a private entity running their domestic leagues, leaving the national FAs to concentrate on the national team and the general affairs of the game.

However, let’s look at the operative word here – MAY. According to the Oxford dictionary, "MAY" means "expressing a wish or hope". As we continue to be wishful and hopeful over the proposition, a question comes to mind – wasn’t the league privatised a long time ago?

“A centreback, a centreback, my kingdom for a centreback!” With apologies to William Shakespeare, extended perhaps to Richard III, these could well be the words of Harry Redknapp ahead of this weekend’s encounter with Manchester United.

They may even be echoed by his managerial counterpart in Saturday’s fixture at White Hart Lane, Sir Alex Ferguson. Tottenham host United after a perfect start to the season for the north London club.

THE Italian Grand Prix is another classic round on the Formula 1 calendar. It’s the fastest track on the calendar where cars go over 330 km/h four times a lap, which also makes it pretty dangerous. Drivers treat this track with a lot of respect, although it is not as physically challenging as places such as Monaco or Spa.
