Problem renewing fire insurance

Thursday, January 28th, 2010 10:53:00

KALWANT of Petaling Jaya is upset that he was unable to renew the fire insurance for his three-storey shoplot
with the same insurers.

Last year, he bought the policy from Allianz Malaysia Berhad and the period covered was from Jan 16, 2009, to Jan 15 this year.

"In May 2009, my shoplot in Section 52, PJ, which was rented to a restaurant, caught fire. I filed a claim with Allianz, and received about RM137,000 in compensation.

"But just before my policy expired, Allianz sent me a letter stating that they have declined my request to renew the policy and the reason was related to my fire claim."

KALWANT says he is disappointed by the rejection and not satisfied with the reason given.

A spokesperson for Allianz General Insurance Company (Malaysia) Berhad (AGIC) says: "The head ofcustomer service, Muralitharan Rajagopal, has contacted KALWANT, providing a solution of sending a surveyor to his premises if he is not able to source an alternate insurer.
KALWANT is happy with the solution provided.

Is this the way to do things? Reject first and then, when there is a complaint, solve it by some counter-offer. The usual manner is for the adjuster to notify the insurer as to the level and type of risk improvements necessary. Thereafter the Insurer would instruct the insured to have the risk improvement measures done up as soon as possible. Perhaps this is a better solution.....
