CVLB code to discipline bus operators

ALOR SETAR: The Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) code of practice that was announced by the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (CVLB) last month to discipline bus operators will be enforced next month.

Board chairman, Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique, said the code would be enforced two weeks after all 224 bus operators were briefed and went through a two-day course in Kuala Lumpur on Feb 23.

She said the briefing and course would stress on bus operations, making records of bus travel, drivers' health and internal audit.

"Drastic action will be taken on operators who do not keep records," Halimah told reporters after a dialogue with 'Persatuan Kereta Sewa Wilayah Utara' here today.

The CVLB introduced the code on Jan 5 after the Sani Exspress bus accident that claimed the lives of 10 passengers near Ipoh on Dec 26 last year.

According to her implementation of the code was on hold as not all bus operators understood the procedures.

"The CVLB is also in the process of increasing staff so that the public's complaints can be received around the clock. Now they are only received (personally) during office hours and via a recording machine after that," said Halimah.

On offences, she said the CVLB last year successfully prosecuted 4,718 cases or 86 per cent of 5,480 offences detected that involved 14 commercial licences.

Comments

If only all interstate buses would keep to the 90km/h and the police enforce it regularly, you will see reduction in accidents. It is a normal state of affair in Malaysia to see buses cruising at 130km/h and flashing lights at cars in front or tailgating other car drivers to give way. The police should have checks everyday in different locations to nab these errant drivers.
