Let women decide more in private sector leadership

KUALA LUMPUR: Corporate sector should give more women opportunities to hold senior or decision-making positions since women are now playing a crucial role in the country's development.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said, as the corporate sector was an integral part of the success of Government Transformation Plan (GTP) and New Economic Model (NEM), women's potential in this sector should not be left behind.

"You will find so much potential, talent, commitment and expertise in women. So the corporate sector must tap the potential to make sure our GTP and NEM succeed.

"If women are left behind in the corporate sector, it will definitely have a drastic effect on us when trying to achieving our target," she told reporters after launching Women's Day 2010 celebration here today.

Asked about the reason for only eight per cent women holding senior or decision-making positions in the corporate sector, Shahrizat said it may be because of the stereotyping of gender roles.

Shahrizat said the Women's Day celebrations that started today would continue until Aug 25 throughout the country with more than 49 types of activities, including seminars, health screening and handicraft workshops.
