Stories from Zainal Alam Kadir

It had to happen in the midst of the new seasons of The Amazing Race, American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, C.S.I and yes, the highly anticipated Akademi Fantasia 8.

My Astro decoder just decided that it had enough of my TV addiction.

Perhaps it was saying "enough is enough", and decided to just go flat-line as I was about to catch the latest episode of The Amazing Race.

An acquaintance who spent half his life in front of the camera thought it was time for him to go behind the camera and step it up a little.

Instead of reading and mouthing scripts, he thought it would be more fun for him to try writing them instead.

After all, how difficult could it be - stringing words into sentences, to form compelling stories?

I was watching another episode of Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader, and it reminded me of one particularly funny incident.

I was with a couple of teenagers and I was trying to gauge what the young ones were up to at that point.

After a few minutes with them, I realised that the two kids seemed to have some "communication problems".

I wish I am Jamie Madrox. At the rate things are going, it would be nice to just like, slap my face, or stomp my feet and create a dozen clones of myself and be everywhere I need to be at the same time!

Makes sense? Well, if you're a fan of X-Men, you might know what I am talking about.

Wanted: A dog, a dragon or tiger. A monkey will also do. No, I am not looking for a new pet. I already have Tia, my cat that’s going to turn 17 soon, thank you.

You see, I just read my Chinese horoscope, and according to what was stated, a horse (that's me) gets along well with a dog, a dragon or a tiger. Monkeys make great friends.

I was in my hotel room in Johor Baru two days ago, reading the newspaper leisurely, when I came across my picture in the entertainment section.

I was placed right smack in the centre of a row of television personalities.

The others were Norman Abdul Halim of KRU, AC Mizal, Sarimah Ibrahim, Aznil Haji Nawawi and Jimmy Shanley.

Apparently, it was a speculative piece on who would be the next Akademi Fantasia host.

Say what you like, but I love reunions. While some people I know would just dismiss the idea of meeting old friends, I would never shy away from an opportunity to fortify my friendships with those who know me better than many in my current life.

I’ve done quite a bit in my lifetime, but never, ever, even in my wildest dreams thought that I had to “impersonate” a footballer.

It was for a simple photo shoot that would be used as part of an ad campaign, but the “trauma” of having to pretend that I know a bit about football is pretty ghastly.

"SOMETHING is following you," a friend whispered to me recently at a rehearsal before one dinner show. He looked dead serious and a little agitated.

I got a little nervous as this was not the first time I was told about something similar.

"Is it good or bad?" I asked. "This one means you harm," he said as he pressed his thumb and index finger like a slight pinch on my right shoulder.

SO, they are not really "disposables", are they? While many thought they were going to just be hot for a while – a flash in the pan, so to speak – the new talents from all the reality shows seem to be doing just fine.

If you saw the recent Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL), I am sure you will agree. Of all the performers that night, only Yuna, Hujan, Misha Omar, Bunkface and Alya were not products of any reality show.

DURING one particular meeting between the Press and captains of recording companies to discuss the fate of the country’s music industry, I decided that enough was enough.

They had just presented a lengthy paper explaining why the industry was suffering, but I was just somehow not too convinced about the findings.

If you ask my parents, Cikgu Eton and Cikgu Kadir, how they met and ended up with each other, you will definitely be in for quite a ride.

If you ask them separately, you'd perhaps get two different pictures.

However, pay a little bit more attention and you'll realise that Cikgu Eton and Cikgu Kadir are painting the same picture from different angles.

A FRIEND wrote on his Facebook status: "Cried watching The Biggest Loser Asia". An abbreviation of three letters something too strong to be printed here, I guess — follows. It's like this friend of mine is shocked that he has a heart.

If I know this friend well, I will attest that he does have a huge heart, underneath his, err, rather cynical (and may I say, compact) exterior.

PEOPLE are always making a big fuss about me not driving, and I think they should just give up. I can drive, but I choose not to.

Owning a car and driving it, now that is a huge fuss for me. I'd rather sit in a taxi, chill and let the driver take control. Me? I'd just tell them where to go. Simple.

While the driver sweats it out trying to figure the best route, I might be taking a nap, or just day-dreaming about things.

DID I tell you that my father, Cikgu Kadir, used to teach history and literature before he retired?

He has loads of books that might just belong to the museum and some of them were too worn and torn to keep, but he'd be very crossed if you tell him to just get rid of them. In Oprah's term, my father is a "hoarder".

“YOU come here!” the small figure behind the desk summoned me.

Like any rookie reporter who had to just take orders and run errands for almost everyone on the floor, all I could do was oblige.

“Here’s something very interesting for you. We just received a call from someone at Dewan Sultan Sulaiman.

LAST Saturday, I turned 43. Big deal? Not really. To be honest, I’m not too keen about birthdays.

If there were any celebration in the past, it would be organised by others – thoughtful friends who enjoyed taunting me about how old I was getting.

Of course I appreciate all the gestures, but as a person who is prone to getting emotional, and would end up crying after being, err, surprised, birthdays are just not fun.

SO there she was, sitting pretty by the pool. There was nothing impressive, or outstanding about her.

In fact, she looked like any American teenager you might see crawling the mall with a bunch of other girls in a scene from one of those movies or TV series you might have watched.

IT was a simple story that I read as a child. It was about the king, the Prime Minister and the gardener.

The story was part of a compilation of tales and folklore from all over South East Asia.

This one was based in Thailand. It told the adventure of a gardener who was part of an expedition. In a boat was the King, his Prime Minister, his men and among them was a gardener.

“WHY don’t you record an album?” a nice woman asked me after listening to my voice, perhaps for the first time, during one of my rehearsals.

“I think you can sing pretty well… You should give it a go,” she continued enthusiastically.

It was sweet of her, but me being me, I just smiled and politely told her that I am just too old to start a singing career.

TAKE your work seriously. Never, ever take yourself seriously.

I keep telling this to myself over and over again like a mantra.

I believe it’s the only way anyone can survive in any environment.

It’s the same thing I’d tell my colleagues at my former offices and the same advice I’d give to all young performers who are working with me.

THE year was 1982. Two huge names were coming to Kluang, Johor, for a massive concert. One was already a legend, while other was fast becoming a force to be reckoned with in the country’s music industry.

HAD just got of the stage and was heading towards the tour bus, when a man with his very cute daughter stopped me for a picture.

As I obliged, he took out a piece of paper from his pocket and placed it in my palm.

“I am sorry,” he said. “But I have to be blunt … I really am an opportunist.”

I was a little surprised with his confession, but tried my best to keep the smile on.

IT was the second day of Raya a couple of years back. I had to rush back to Kuala Lumpur to appear as a guest on a live, morning talk show.

Apparently, the subject was simple - how celebrities celebrate Raya (stop rolling your eyes!) in different environments.

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 12:26:00

OH dear! I can’t get those Raya songs out of my head. Again. One after another, they keep playing in my mind, over and over again - reminding me that if I don’t go home now, I would be the saddest creature on earth.

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009 13:18:00
IN less than two weeks, I’ll be in Sungai Mati for Raya. To be exact, home, where the heart is — where everything that matters remains and where true love resides.

I can even imagine now, everything that’s going to transpire during the last week of Ramadan.

Cikgu Kadir, my father, will be fussing about how many chickens should be stocked and how many ketupat
should be prepared.

IT was yet another awkward situation. The event took place back stage a few years ago during one awards ceremony.

Before the show started I sat at the holding area with several big names – most were popular singers and actresses.

They were all dolled up in their finest, or rather, their sponsored (borrowed?) finest.

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009 11:59:00

A COUPLE of years ago, I received one of the funniest, if not most amusing, calls from someone whom I thought was a friend – someone who should know me, well, inside out.

I hate mono syllables. Really.

Perhaps a lot of my closer friends would know that I am an expert in monologues (I can talk for hours with no interruption), that could drive them crazy, but monosyllables?

Now that is something that can drive me nuts.

Here's an example:

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009 12:41:00

ABANG Jai sat at the end of the table quietly. He seemed to have a lot on his mind but was not able to express it.

His eyes moved excitedly from left to right and it was an effort for him to even say anything. Keeping his head
up was quite an effort too.

I could not help but stare. Next to me was another interesting character. He looked pretty ordinary, but whenever he tried to speak, it sounded more like a garble.

WHEN they came, I felt like E.T without Elliot around to save me. There I was, staring at a scary figure standing in front of my house. Behind him was an extremely noisy ambulance that would be my transport to the hospital.

You see, after the call from the Health Department, that I was H1N1-positive, I already devised a plan. I did not want my neighbours to know that I had it, so I decided to dress like I was going on a holiday.
